If you look at what is happening in our country, it becomes hard to miss that the ground continues becoming increasingly difficult. A vast number of people are having a tough time coping with the economic meltdown, which is even harder on private school teachers. Nowhere is the economic pinch being felt more acutely than in this industry, with so many operating on a shoestring that barely allows its workers to live. The even more troubling part is that most teachers have no idea where to start in making additional income, either as a replacement or supplement to their day job. So as you read on, this write-up should cut across every teacher alive now especially teachers in private schools that are mostly underpaid. Oh, teaching is absolutely a noble profession, but in Nigeria, it still isn’t lucrative, particularly for private hirelings. But I think there is still hope, and that’s what I am going to share with you today.
My perspective will not only be from my experiences, but I plan to borrow some of the ideas used by other teachers who were able to make it through teaching and still find a way to earn someone near a middle-class income. This is not the end of it for you if teaching becomes your profession. There are still many ways that you can capitalize on where you currently stand and work to enhance your financial well-being. Should you stay in your current situation, either as a transfer within the company or through some higher level of retention and engagement, there are still many things one can do today if extra income is desired.
Why Not Learn Affiliate Marketing?
One of the best ways you can earn decent money these days is by going into affiliate marketing. This is great if you work in a low-paying private school like me. Being able to create content for affiliate marketing can serve as an important secondary source of income. Affiliate marketing is the process of earning a commission by promoting other people’s products, mainly online. The wonderful news about affiliate marketing is that it can be made somewhat easier. Today, more than ever before, thanks to the availability of social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, alongside numerous other outlets like Instagram and WhatsApp, there are opportunities around every corner. You can reach a large audience easily when you already have a sizable social media following, but if you do not, some other pay-to-play options like paid advertising are cost-effective! Affiliate marketing can be a handful to start, but when you get the hang of it and are consistent with what works for you, this could just as well translate more into an extra income. Lucky for you, there are plenty of free resources on the internet that can help get one started (free courses, tutorials, etc.) and discussion platforms where people who have been through this share experiences.
Learn How to Drive
One popular method of earning more money outside your profession as a teacher is learning how to drive. Initially, this will sound like a very weird recommendation, but just bear with me. If you have not already learned to drive, and do so with the intention of getting a car in the future, then you can work part-time on becoming an operator for traffic. Ridesharing (or in a few cases, dropping off goods or providing private transportation services) can be used as a way to make some extra cash on the side. Driving provides flexibility in your schedule, so you can be a driver on the side even while also holding down another full or part-time job as an educator. Eventually, you will find out that driving pays more than your teaching job, and with experience after a couple of years, feel the rewards for being able to do any branch of choice.
Become a Youtuber
Once a small platform, YouTube is now enormous, filled with millions of content creators spanning across every possible subject as relevant. If you are a teacher, then probably there is some valuable knowledge and skills in an area that could benefit others by learning it from your point of view. One option to consider is to start your own YouTube channel and share educational content, teaching tips, or even insight into what life as an educator is like. The thing with starting a YouTube channel and posting videos is that it won’t need you to heavily invest in. You only need a decent camera phone and you are ready to go. Being consistent and creating real value is the key to getting success on YouTube. As your channel expands, you can start making money through YouTube’s AdSense program, which enables you to earn from ads on videos. For you to start making money on YouTube, there are a number of conditions that the platform needs you to meet, such as having at least 500 subscribers and 3,000 watch hours. It takes time to reach these milestones, but the potential payoff is huge. In addition to this, YouTube also has other available ways of monetization like channel memberships, merch sales, and sponsored videos.
Develop Digital Skills
With everyone going digital in most parts of their lives, you have to be even more skilled, and as a teacher, you can perfectly benefit from that. The demand for digital skills is huge, and you can learn what would be quite difficult without the help of the internet from your home. Whether you are here to learn graphic design, web development, or digital marketing, there is a proper course, tutorial, and not video that can help! You do not have to worry about attending the Digital Marketing training since this can be easily done without forcing too much into your day job of teaching! And you can work on your studying and practicing for a few hours each evening or on the weekends. Digital skills are great in that you can use them across a number of different industries. It makes it easier to try new things or even start up your own little side hustle. Thanks to many platforms with free or affordable courses, you will not have to break the bank in order to get started. After you learn a new skill or two, look at finding work as a freelancer (or starting your own business) and see if this continues to make teaching come alive for you.
Provide Home Tuitions
The best way to earn a decent income as a private sector teacher is by providing home tuitions. Parents will pay for additional tutoring, especially in subjects like Math and English, where students are often lacking. Giving home lessons enables you to use your teaching skills in a different environment, giving the students who need it most the attention they deserve. Teaching Home Lessons Can Be Easier Than You Think. Look into parents in your school community, explore online forums and groups where parents talk about educational needs. You may even market your services with word-of-mouth. But over time, as word gets around that you are effective in helping students raise their grades, your demand will likely grow.
Get a Side-Hustle Together
This can also be through blogging and is an A+ side job for teachers. It enables you to scale your knowledge, experience, and opinion belts so that even while offering value in larger quantities, it can be monetized with different kinds of strategies. Starting a blog is pretty easy; you just need to register a domain name and hosting that will take care of your writing. You could choose education/teaching tips or maybe even your own hobby. After you launch your blog, take advantage of ways to earn money from sponsored posts or affiliate marketing or by implementing Google AdSense if ads are laid on your site and get paid for impression views. It will take time and consistency, but blogging can be quite profitable in the long run. Instead, the goal should be to provide value content that your users love, which will lead them back to your website. Therefore, the more your blog grows (if you do it right), so will your earning potential, but most importantly, turn a passion for writing into profit.
Forex Trading
Another source that can earn one a handsome income, but you need to understand the risks associated with this. A teacher, for example, can acquire knowledge (from the point of origin) and work on to ensure a better understanding as well, before venturing into trading! What Is Forex Trading? In simple language, it means buying and selling currencies aiming to make a profit out of the trade. Forex trading involves basic or technical analysis trends that enable us to examine that forex trading should be advantageous for you. Forex trading is an uncertain market, but it will reward you with high profits in the end if done properly. Just take it one baby step at a time, practice on a demo account, and keep reading about how the markets function. As you gain more experience and confidence, eventually freeing up the entire day so that at this point in time it is possible to earn additional income trading with real money.
Selling Products
One of the easiest and most powerful ways to make more money from home is by selling products. Whether you’re selling a physical product or service, this is that common belief of identifying the market need and filling it. That could mean selling products to other teachers, parents of students, or heck, you can also sell items online. Buy large amounts at wholesale and sell them for more. If you’re looking to get into selling physical items, some easy buying will pay off. It could be anything from school supplies to handmade crafts. Offering writing tutoring or writing helper services at your high schools, editing, or selling products doesn’t require a significant upfront investment, and with the right approach, it can quickly become a steady source of extra income. The key is to be resourceful, identify what people need, and find a way to provide it.
Conclusion
Teaching is a hugely rewarding job, but it does not always lend itself to the financial stability that many teachers need to prosper. Nevertheless, if you explore the options mentioned above, then you can actually increase your earnings without quitting. Or you can learn a new skill or start a side business to slot in with your lifestyle; the options are limitless.
