One of the very important decisions that you need to make before moving to Canada is choosing which city has everything that immigrants wish for. Location affects quality of life, career prospects, education for kids, and how happy you will probably be. While Toronto and Vancouver might seem like obvious choices for new residents, MoneySense magazine discovered that these cities are not necessarily the most desirable destinations for those looking to relocate. In contrast, cities like Denver and Detroit which are very affordable but have few job prospects relative to the size of their populations for high-pay work in computer programming or finance. We go into some of the highest-recommended Canadian cities in more detail, including where they cost and improve migration mechanisms.
The Criteria for Ranking
The publication ranked 415 Canadian cities based on 10 objective criteria to determine the most suitable places for newcomers. These criteria included economic development, affordable real estate, population growth, tax policies, healthcare coverage, crime rates, climate, and infrastructure support systems. The ranking focused on factors that impact day-to-day living and long-term happiness, excluding subjective factors like scenic beauty and community friendliness.
Oakville, Ontario
Topping the list is Oakville, Ont., an affluent suburb that seamlessly blends small-town appeal with access to Toronto’s bustling economy. Oakville, at a population of approximately 209,000, offers an enviable work/life balance with one of the lower jobless rates at just 5.7%. It sits in the top decile of U.S. areas by average annual household income ($161k per year on a median). That being said, this also comes with a high cost of living, the median home price in Honolulu is $1.2 million and average monthly rent for a two-bedroom apartment hovers around $1,460.
That said, Oakville dismisses the costs with people praising it for all its amenities -great schools & recreation facilities and an abundance of cultural activities. It ranks third for families and fifth in the retiree category which makes it an especially popular city with those demographics. Oakville has the political emphasis on community development, so local infrastructure is very good with quality residents living nearby, which makes Oakville on top among other new immigrant destinations.
Ottawa, Ontario
Ottawa, the capital of Canada, is among many other things a place that pops up in your mind when you hear about quality of life studies. Ottawa is the perfect balance of dependable government town and bustling metropolis, home to around one million residents. This area has an unemployment rate of 5.1 percent and the average household income comes in at $114,280. Ottawa had more reasonable real estate prices than places like Oakville, where a mean home would run you $510,000 in 2016 (above). The rental market is also reasonable; there are two-bedroom apartments available from around $1,240 per month.
In Ottawa, this goes to complement its balance in economic opportunities against affordable living and a robust educational infrastructure. The city is a center for tech solutions, and its shift in recent times to high technology has well-developed its environmental qualities. Residents are highly educated, which also supports a robust service sector, with Ottawa now home to not just federal bureaucrats but a broad range of professions.
Mount Royal, Quebec
A Hidden Gem, while Mount Royal in Quebec may not have the recognition of other cities on this list, it offers a high quality of life. A small industrial town, the population of this place located northwest of downtown Montreal is 21.8 thousand people. It stands out for maintaining much of its greenery and obtaining a well-balanced integration between urbanization and nature, thus having been awarded as a Historical Heritage or National Monument Location.
With an unemployment rate of 6.3%, a little higher than the city average, Mount Royal provides high average household incomes at $191,670. It is one of the most expensive real estate markets, with a mean home price at $1.3 million (as compared to California cities like San Jose or Los Angeles where they’re in between about $700,000 and $500,000) but rents are fairly immortal across Australia with sample wage earning national Australians only paying/ low rent costs even for an average two-bedroom apartment being near about $220 each month that helps lower-middle-class people as opposed to other countries such as China who often pay up Also much more costly forms long-term rates charges by developers designed primarily for these projects themselves! The city’s infrastructure is also very developed so lounging, recreation & shopping are gonna blast $$ and hence Arlington might be a high-in-your-face city for some but it’s definitely built to love families with children (schools), family professionals, and foreigners who come down only during weekends.
King City
King City, Ont., Population up by 18.4% over the past five years. This is not only Toronto-adjacent; more than anything this area has a lot of stuff going on in its own right due to business/agriculture and amateur sports facilities. Always nice if you like an enviable local economy!
The average household income of $191,000 amongst its residents is high; it costs about 7.5 years’ worth of savings for a down payment as the median home price in this city sits at $1.4 million. Nonetheless, with such prices King is still an attractive destination for those who want the benefits of suburban living while being less than an hour from Toronto and its job market due to mature development services and community resources.
Toronto
Often called the country’s “economic engine”, Toronto is a major Canadian city and its largest. With a population of 2.9 million, this city is now one of the world’s most diverse cities, half are immigrants. However, the city has not hidden this diversity and it actually encourages an abundance of cultural backgrounds so that they are celebrated openly conducive to variety in traditions taking place.
But the city is not without its issues. With a 5.7% unemployment rate, the average household income in town is $105,340 but housing ain’t cheap here either. An average home: $880,920; Rent for a two-bedroom apartment:$1,430/month. Even with these expenses, Toronto continues to draw in migrants on the strength of its job market, a boon for sectors such as finance, technology, and education.
Milton
A similar pattern is evident in another burgeoning town, Milton, Ontario, which has grown by 22.4% over the past half-decade. This close to Toronto, it’s favored by those who commute, but with the average house price of $1.1 million and growing rents that would take nearly nine years for a local household to save up, buying property will be tough here too.
The borough of Brossard, Quebec, has a similarly low unemployment rate of 4.9% and significantly lower average home prices coming in at $456,440 on Canadian MLS systems. Vaudreuil sits next to Montreal and is affordable, making it an accessible choice for newcomers in the area.
Delta, Located in the Greater Vancouver area, Delta is a blend of city convenience and suburban serenity. Delta makes it in Ontario because of its average household income ($114,590) and fairly affordable housing for Vancouver at just over $1 million.
Conclusion
Picking the best city to settle in Canada is more than just big cities or popular ones. The MoneySense ranking showed that smaller, less well-known cities like Oakville, Mount Royal, and King City tend to have more of what recent immigrants need – affordability, job opportunities, and quality of life. The economic opportunities and cultural amenities in places like Toronto or Ottawa continue to make larger centers a big draw, but for many Ontarians the cost of living there may prove prohibitive.
At the end of the day, what is best depends on individual priorities, whether job prospects are top-of-mind or maybe family-friendly environments take precedence or perhaps your consideration is over long-term real estate investments. Newcomers to Canada should take all of the above into consideration, in order to find a city that will not only suit them and their circumstances but also offer an inviting community where they can start life anew.
